11 December, International mountain day, ‘Mountains matter for Youth’.

The Metsovio Interdisciplinary Research Center (MIRC) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is the first educational institute in Greece specialized in mountain regions. For 12 years, we study the mountain areas in Greece through an interdisciplinary approach and we prepare young scientists with knowledge and experiences to understand and provide solutions for the many issues that the people of these areas are confronted with.

For the IMD, we decided to organize an event with the students of the primary school of the mountain town Metsovo, Greece (and also home of the MIRC). The event includes:

• A lecture about the evolution of mountain hiking and the mountain shelters (by two MSc students of the MSc “Environment and Development of Mountain Regions”).
• A lecture about mountain life and activities (by a member of the organizing committee of the “URSA” mountain race).

A treasure hunt game where the objective is to find hidden words and phrases in books about mountains.
