Aesthetic Interventions at the Municipality of G. Karaiskakis

«Aesthetics is the relaying of values not forms; forms need to evolve in order for the values to survive”. In these words, P. Michelis points out the significance of form, and thus the architectural form, in the preservation of values and tradition. This paper examines the image of the built environment and evolution of the Municipality of Georgios Karaiskakis, exposing views for its aesthetic and overall appearance. Following the initial positive impressions to the visitor, the need for the aesthetic improvement of the built environment is becoming apparent, especially in the populated areas. The qualities of the place are presented, emphasizing on the need for preservation, whereas the negative aspects are pointed out. Subsequently, proposals are made, aiming at the mitigation of the problems arousing, the need of development, and equally the overall aesthetic upgrading of the area, parallel to the respect of tradition and the characteristic form of the local architecture.

Designing a creamery in the Georgios Karaiskakis Municipality

Terrain condition of the Municipality of G. Karaiskakis are favourable for livestock farming and, nowadays, an important part of the population is engaged in these activities. Considering the characteristics of the study area and of the Greek cheese making industry, this paper analyzes from a financial viewpoint the viability of a small-sized cheese making unit that will produce two cheese products, namely feta and graviera and two by-products, i.e. butter and mizithra cheese. The selection of the products was based on a SWOT analysis (products with high demand, offered at attractive prices) and financial requirements (mainly to keep the investment cost at affordable levels). The results of the deterministic and stochastic financial analysis show that the proposed investment will be profitable. Nevertheless, it is evident that the final outcome will depend on the organizational actions that should be made on the basis of a realistic strategic plan.

Energy saving interventions in municipal buildings of the Georgios Karaiskakis Municipality

The possibilities of applying energy saving measures in municipal buildings are examined in this paper. Two municipal buildings, in the mountainous Municipality of Georgios Karaiskakis are used as case studies.

The thermal losses of the buildings and the relative energy demand for cooling and heating are initially calculated. A number of different energy saving scenarios, related both to the building envelope and to the electromechanical systems of each of the buildings, are formed. In order to select the optimum energy saving scenario technical and financial are concerned. Finally, some general conclusions about energy improvement of municipal buildings are set out, based on the findings of the study.

Expectations of the youth in the Georgios Karaiskakis Municipality

The present study examines the life of young people in the mountain regions of Greece, using the Georgios Karaiskakis Municipality as a case study. Considering the recreation and development of Georgios Karaiskakis area, someone can understand the importance of the youth. The study aims to record the daily lives, difficulties, concerns, thoughts and dreams of young people. The youth feels disappointed by the absence of residents and children, and the lack of health, education, and entertainment facilities. On the other side, the students seemed to have special powerful bond with their homeland and expressed their desire to stay there in the future.

Integrated development scenarios for the Georgios Karaiskakis Municipality (Collective Work)

The ongoing multidimensional crisis demands new development approaches that respond to actual needs and describe the way for the creative utilization of the particular characteristics of the natural and socioeconomic environment. The need for this kind of planning approaches becomes more intense in mountainous areas, which remained to a large extent outside the dominant development strategies. Integrated approach, interdisciplinarity and education can be key features of these new approaches. In this context, within the course “Introduction to Environment and Development Science” of the interdisciplinary postgraduate programme “Environment and Development” at the National Technical University of Athens (concentration “Environment and Development of Mountainous Areas”), the students conduct development surveys for different regions in Greece using the methodology of WID (Worthliving Integrated Development). During the academic year of 2015-2016, an interdisciplinary workgroup of students of various disciplines conducted a development study for the mountainous municipality of Georgios Karaiskakis, based on the methodology of Worthliving Integrated Development. This paper presents the methodological steps followed in the educational process in order to highlight to the general public the systematic methodology of integrated development, as well as its developmental results for the study area.

Integrated management of olive trees cultivation in the Georgios Karaiskakis Municipality

In the present paper the current situation of the olive sector in the world, in Greece and in the Municipality of Georgios Karaiskakis are firstly analyzed. Some important issues are presented, regarding the management of the crop of the olive trees and then, proposals are made for the integrated management of the olives in the municipal department of Heraklia in the Georgios Karaiskakis Municipality. Through the proposals, it is aimed to increase the farmers' income, the employment and the cohesion in this isolated and mountainous Municipality. Taking advantage of the key benefits, such us the history of the region and the new trends and technologies for the management of the olive, conclusions are made and solutions are proposed in order to improve the current situation.

Karaeskakis – Digital development of the ‘Georgios Karaiskakis’ Municipality

The rural areas, which within the Greek territory are mainly mountainous and/ or remote, utilize a small extent of the modern tools of information and communication technology (ICT). In contrast, in urban areas such tools, though recently introduced, are not only employed but also rapidly evolving. The evolution of technology towards mobile devices has led to the development of tools that leverage their potential for various purposes. At the same time, a new trend has arisen, according to which the citizens are invited to actively contribute in some activities through specifically developed mechanisms, and is called “crowdsourcing”. In the present paper, the possibilities of digital technology, mobile devices and crowdsourcing have been combined in order to develop a custom application in accordance to the special attributes of the ‘Georgios Karaiskakis’ Municipality. An application which will give the residents/ visitors the opportunity to record various problems that are detected and need to be resolved, providing valuable support to the local authorities.

Nature-based tourism in the rivers’ landscape of the Georgios Karaiskakis Municipality

Mountain areas are turning into up-and-coming tourism destinations, as pockets of invaluable natural and cultural heritage. Considering that mass tourism induces major negative impacts on mountain communities and ecosystems, a different approach of tourism development is necessary to be established. The improvement of   livelihood of local host population, the environmental protection, the exposure and revitalization of local culture must be the principles of mountain tourism development. In the frame of alternative forms of tourism, the Municipality of Karaiskakis is examined as a region of nature-based tourism development through hiking routes. Specifically, the river landscape is selected to be the research area and spot interventions are proposed so that its distinctive natural and cultural elements to be designated.

The Renewable Energy Resources of the Georgios Karaiskakis Municipality

The Georgios Karaiskakis municipality, like most mountainous regions, are endowed with considerable renewable energy potential. In this paper, an attempt is made to determine its potential and to investigate the reasons and possibilities of its exploitation. The utilization of the available resources could be viewed as an element at the basis of which the development of the region will be enhanced, with primary objective the protection of natural environment but also as an opportunity to stop facing the risk of energy poverty.

Treating water quality problems in the Municipality of G. Karaiskakis

Water is a public good, a natural and biological element, a unique and distinctive natural resource. Local communities have to play a significant role in the conservation and development of this natural resource, while considering the challenge faced, not only as an obligation but as an entitlement, as well. In this paper it is tried to give prominence to the importance of water for the man himself. In a region where overabundance in spring waters, due to increased rainfall and water basins has been observed, it is unacceptable for the drinking water to be of dubious quality and to be considered as a peril for the public health. Thus, a chlorination system has been proposed and priced for the community of Astrochori, which is going to lead the rest of the regions by example.
