Forest fires in the Municipality of Pogoni
Forest fires in the Municipality of Pogoni
Globally the Mediterranean ecosystems are some of the most vulnerable ecosystems and at the end of 20th century it seems that these ecosystems are most affected by the adverse effect of climate change. It is widely accepted among private and governmental organizations around the globe that climate change can have detrimental impact on the economy and the natural environment. There are several factors that steer climate change and, among them, forest fires are posing as one of the leading threat to Greek forests. This is evident through the considerable scale of economic, social and ecological disasters occurring in Greece during the summer period as a result of the forest fires. Alike some of the other Municipalities within Greece, the Municipality of Pogoni is also facing the major threat of forest fires, which potentially could have devastating impact on the local ecosystems. This paper used the Municipality of Pogoni as a case study and the objective of it is to identify the phenomenon of forest fires and the difficulties that are faced by the Municipality of Pogoni, while protecting forests from the devastating effect of fires. In order to make suggestions regarding the amount of reduction required on the risk of fires and also the resulting impacts, interviews were conducted with the fire enforcement department and, in addition to that, statistical data were also studied.
