Lakes have been centers of civilizations from prehistoric era and are still attracting prosperous cities and traditional fishing-villages around them. Mountainous land is especially favored in lake waters. Tourism is a well-established economic activity in many countries and in a more restricted level in Greek lakes. If, lake-side tourism activities were incorporated in an environmental friendly development policy, aiming at public benefit they could generate an alternative development opportunity in mountain areas.

The abandonment of mountainous areas implies the abandonment of what was created over time in order to cover the residents' needs of those areas. The socioeconomic conditions that forced the highlanders to "seek their fortune" in small or larger urban centers, led not only to a number of unused buildings but also to deserted villages. After the implementation of ‘Kallikratis’ administrative reform, the Municipality of Pogoni faces all the problems that beset the mountainous areas nowadays.

Entrepreneurship can foster and promote economic growth and social development in mountain less favoured areas, particularly in conditions of economic depression. Nevertheless, the study of entrepreneurship in mountain areas is still at an early stage. The present study examines the Pogoni Municipality’s components of entrepreneurial environment. Through in-depth interviews, the influence exerted by the natural and social environment of mountain regions on entrepreneurship, the special motivations and pursuits of entrepreneurs, and the problems and opportunities, are highlighted.

This paper includes the results of a survey aiming at recording and interpreting the attitudes, the opinions and the experiences of the youth living in mountainous areas, and particularly in the area of Pogoni. The development perspectives of mountainous areas are closely related to retaining the young population. This is the reason why the youth are the objective of study of this paper. The necessary data were collected through interviews, using questionnaires. The analysis of the results was made through SPSS software and specific conclusions were formed.

An extensive area in the region of Hepirus (including areas in the regional units of Ioannina and Thesprotia) belongs to the territories of Greece, in which oil explorations are going to be made. There are some indications (from previous explorations) that oil and gas deposits of small - scale exist in Hepirus. Despite the fact that the deposits seem to be quite small, their potential exploitation will result in important changes in the economy of the area. It should be also noted that such investments have environmental impacts.

The protection of watercourses from erosion is the most important and necessary intervention to any river in order to control the flow channel protecting in that way the riparian land uses. Erosion leads to soil leaching, desertification and downstream sediment transportation reducing consistently the river capacity. Initially, in this paper the soil erosion phenomenon, its determinant factors, as well as the usual protective measures taken are briefly analyzed.

Globally the Mediterranean ecosystems are some of the most vulnerable ecosystems and at the end of 20th century it seems that these ecosystems are most affected by the adverse effect of climate change. It is widely accepted among private and governmental organizations around the globe that climate change can have detrimental impact on the economy and the natural environment. There are several factors that steer climate change and, among them, forest fires are posing as one of the leading threat to Greek forests.
